Test methods and performance requirements

BS5609 is a British standard that sets out requirements for chemical resistance and durability of labels used on dangerous goods and chemical packaging transported by sea. Certification to BS5609 means the labels have undergone rigorous testing to maintain their legibility and adhesive properties even under extreme conditions such as prolonged exposure to salt water and sun.

Print key effectiveness

This test measures the resistance to pressure removal by adhesive. Ink must not be removed from more than 5% of the printed area of each color. Any changes should not be less than grade 3 in the British standard gray scale. Any legends or symbols must remain identifiable.

Abrasion resistance

This test measures the abrasion resistance of the print after exposure to a seawater/sand abrasion cycle. The color must remain recognizable. Any change should be no less than grade 2 in the British standard gray scale. Any legends or symbols must remain identifiable.

Permanence of print

This test measures resistance to change after exposure to salt spray/accelerated light cycles. The level of exposure to artificial daylight is measured with a Blue Wool reference *. The samples are exposed to Blue Wool 5, gray scale 2. The color should remain recognizable. Any fading or color change should not be less than Grade 2 of the British Standard Gray Scale. Any legends or symbols must remain identifiable.
